Visitation FAQs

Do we need reservations for tastings?

Friday through Sunday reservations are *HIGHLY* recommended.  We have limited seating and staff, so a reservation will make sure that you have a table and appropriate staff in order to do a tasting.

If you do NOT have a reservation, we may be able to accommodate you for a tasting, depending on seating availability and staffing.  If we are unable to get you a tasting, you are welcome to get a glass or bottle of wine and enjoy the scenery and Blake, our rhino!  There’s generally plenty of open seating in our Grove area.

Monday to Thursday we still recommend a reservation, but those are generally slower days where the likelihood of us being able to to a tasting without a reservation is higher.  So if you could make a reservation, we would very much appreciate it!

Can you see the rhino if you do a tasting?

Yes, absolutely!  He is hanging out on the property and is easily visibile most times of the day.  He loves people, so is generally not very shy.

Does it cost to visit Rhinory?

No, there is no mandatory entrance fee to visit the Rhinory grounds or our Tasting Room. However, we do request a suggested donation of $8 per guest. 100% of these contributions go directly to the Rhinory Foundation, providing vital funding for rhino conservation efforts across the globe. Your support helps us protect Blake’s wild cousins and ensure a future for the species.

Are kids allowed?

Yes, absolutely!  We have a 21+ age minimum for the rhino experience. However, children of all ages are welcome to visit the property, but please adhere to the following rules:

  • Children must be accompanied and supervised by an ADULT at all times.
  • Please keep kids off all fences, tables, trees, dirt mounds or anything else that could be dangerous.
  • No running, ball throwing, rock throwing, mulch throwing and gravel throwing at any time.

Do you need a reservation for a rhino experience?

Yes.  Those are done Friday to Sunday and require a reservation.  You can book those on the reservations tab.  The maximum group size is 4.

Do you accept large groups?

To ensure an exceptional experience for all guests and to maintain the serene environment of our sanctuary, we have the following policy for large parties:

  • Groups of 8 or More: We require advanced notice and direct coordination for any group of 8 or more guests. Please contact our concierge at info@rhinory.com or 830-992-9526 to discuss your visit.

  • Tasting Room & Encounters: Large groups often require a private host or specialized booking to ensure a high-touch experience. These sessions are subject to availability and must be reserved in advance. Please contact our concierge at info@rhinory.com or 830-992-9526 to book your tasting.

  • Glass & Bottle Service: While our outdoor Savannah seating is open, large groups are encouraged to reach out ahead of time so we can better accommodate your party’s footprint.

  • Transportation: If your group is arriving via a shuttle, limo, or bus, please notify us in advance. We have specific parking and arrival protocols for commercial transport.

Do you host special events or private functions?

Yes! Rhinory offers a one-of-a-kind backdrop for mission-driven celebrations, corporate retreats, and private gatherings. To ensure these events align with the tranquility of our sanctuary and the needs of our resident rhinos, we require the following:

  • Advanced Coordination: All special events must be coordinated in advance with our events team. Please contact us at info@rhinory.com or 830-992-9526 to discuss your vision and check availability.
  • Intimacy & Scale: We specialize in intimate, high-touch events that respect the quiet nature of our conservation estate.
  • Customized Experiences: We can often bundle private rhino encounters or technical tastings into your function to create a truly memorable “Wine with a Purpose” event.

Do you offer food?

While we do not have a full-service kitchen on-site, we offer a curated selection of charcuterie boards and small bites designed to perfectly pair with our Texas and South African wines. These seasonal offerings are available for enjoyment in our Tasting Room or while overlooking the Savannah.

What are your hours?

We are open 7 days a week from 11:00 AM to 5:30 PM. To ensure you have plenty of time to enjoy your selection, our last pour is served at 4:30 PM.

How many rhinos do you have?

We currently have 1 rhino: Blake.  He is a serious star!!

We are hoping to get many more rhinos in the coming months/years.  We are actively working on it!

Rhino Encounter FAQs

Do we need reservations for rhino encounters?

Yes. At Rhinory, the well-being and safety of Blake, our resident Southern White Rhino, are our absolute priorities. Because our encounters are designed to be intimate and mission-driven, we require reservations for the following reasons:

  • Animal Welfare & Routine: Blake thrives on a consistent, stress-free schedule. Reservations allow our expert keepers to manage his day effectively, ensuring he is never overwhelmed and that his participation is always voluntary and positive.
  • Intimate Experience Quality: To ensure every guest receives a high-touch, educational experience without the distractions of a crowd, we strictly limit the capacity of our encounters.
  • Expert Supervision: Every encounter requires the presence of our professional Rhino Keepers to provide technical insights and maintain safety protocols. Pre-booking ensures our specialized staff is available to guide your journey.
  • Safety Standards: Rhinos are magnificent but powerful animals. Reservations allow us to conduct a brief orientation and maintain a controlled, secure environment for both our guests and Blake.

Can I book a rhino encounter when I arrive at the winery?

While we welcome walk-ins for our Wine Tastings, Rhino encounters often book up weeks in advance due to their limited nature. We highly recommend securing your spot via our online booking system as soon as you plan your visit to avoid disappointment.

Is there an age requirement for rhino encounters?

Yes. All guests participating in a Rhino & Wine Experiences must be 21 years of age or older. As these experiences are intimately paired with our premium wine tastings and involve behind-the-scenes access to a sensitive habitat, we require all participants to be of legal drinking age. Please ensure all members of your party have a valid government-issued ID available at check-in.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule?

Because these are limited-capacity experiences that require specific staffing, we ask for at least 24 notice for cancellations or rescheduling. This allows us to offer the opening to another guest on our waiting list.

What should I wear for the rhino encounter?

To ensure your comfort and safety, we recommend the following:

  • Closed-Toe Shoes (Required): For safety reasons, all guests participating in an encounter must wear closed-toe shoes (sneakers, boots, or hiking shoes). Sandals, flip-flops, or open-back shoes are not permitted behind the scenes.

  • Comfortable, Outdoor Clothing: You will be moving through a natural habitat. We suggest comfortable, durable clothing that you don’t mind getting a little dusty.

  • Weather-Appropriate Layers: The Texas Hill Country weather can vary. Check the forecast and bring a light jacket or sun protection (hats and sunglasses) as needed.

  • Avoid Loose Accessories: To prevent distractions for Blake and ensure safety, please avoid wearing loose, dangling jewelry or long, flowing scarves during the encounter.

Are there any allergy concerns I should be aware of?

Because our encounters take place in a natural, working habitat, guests may be exposed to various environmental allergens. Please consider the following:

  • Hay & Feed: Blake’s diet consists primarily of high-quality hay, which is present throughout the encounter areas. Guests with significant hay or grass allergies should take appropriate precautions.

  • Environmental Allergens: You will be outdoors in the Texas Hill Country, where dust, native pollen, and seasonal grasses are common.

  • Food Allergies: If your experience includes a chocolate pairing, please be aware that our artisan chocolates may contain or come into contact with milk, nuts, or soy. Please notify your host of any severe food allergies upon arrival.

We recommend that guests with known severe allergies bring any necessary medications (such as an inhaler or EpiPen) and consult with their physician before participating.
