Some mothers leave an impact in quiet ways.
Through protection. Through patience. Through simply staying close.
This Mother’s Day, we want to introduce you to someone very special: Lola, a critically endangered Eastern black rhino at Ol Pejeta Conservancy whose story is one of resilience, hope, and the remarkable bond between a mother and her child.
Earlier this month, Lola celebrated her birthday on May 5th. But this year felt different. It carried a deeper meaning.
After experiencing the heartbreaking loss of previous calves, Lola has found renewed purpose in motherhood. Out on the open plains, she can now be found guiding her daughter with a quiet confidence, never wandering far, always close enough to protect and teach.
There is something powerful about witnessing that kind of love.
No matter the species, motherhood often looks the same. It’s the instinct to protect. To guide. To show up every single day. It’s found in the small moments that often say the most.
Because of your continued support, we were given an incredible honor in this story.
We were invited to help name Lola’s calf.
Meaning “My Light,” her name couldn’t feel more fitting.
Born on January 29, 2025, Liora is curious, energetic, and full of personality. She spends her days close to Lola’s side, exploring the world one step at a time while learning from the one who knows it best.
Watching them together feels like watching hope in motion.
Liora represents more than a new generation. She represents resilience after loss. A future still worth fighting for. Proof that conservation is not simply about protecting wildlife — it’s about creating the opportunity for stories like this to continue.
Even more meaningful, Liora’s name has now been permanently recorded in the Kenya Wildlife Service database, creating a lasting piece of this journey and a reminder that your support reaches farther than you may ever realize.
Because moments like these don’t happen alone.
They happen because people choose to care. They happen because people believe endangered species deserve a future. They happen because a community came together and made an impact.
This Mother’s Day, we celebrate the mothers who nurture, protect, and inspire — whether they walk on two legs or four.
And today, we celebrate Lola.
Because this is more than a moment.
It’s a legacy.
